Not-So Ancient Pyramid

Posted on September 19, 2025 by Stephen Edwards

Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis shares its name with a much older but also famous river city. To develop a closer bond with its historic Egyptian namesake, the Great American Pyramid was constructed in 1991. Initially, the Pyramid was a basketball arena, but since 2015, the Pyramid has become home to a Bass Pro Shop and the Big Cypress Lodge.

The former arena has become an outlet for all things outdoors. It even features a hotel, a bowling alley, a shooting gallery, several restaurants, and offers excellent views of the Mississippi River, the city of Memphis, and eastern Arkansas.

This pyramid is made of glass and steel, and there are no mysteries about its construction compared to its ancient Egyptian counterparts. The Great American Pyramid is now considered the 8th-tallest pyramid in the world. I’m glad that Memphis has been able to repurpose the pyramid as a tourist attraction. The pyramid attracted 3 million people when Bass Pro Shops first opened in 2015 and continues to contribute to the revitalization of downtown Memphis.

Bass Pro Shops are known for their in-store aquariums and Simon was willing to pose in front of the fish. One the best items about these aquariums is that they feature fish native to the area.
When you visit the Bass Pro Shop in Memphis, several of the boats are floating on the in-store pond. Bass Pro Shops are fun to see, but moving merchandise like this boat is the main purpose of the store.
